Now, let me back up a bit... how did we end up here? Well, you can read ' Our Story' on the right-hand side of this page for the early highlights. I'll summarize the rest for you in these few bullets (ok, there are 7 years' worth, it's more than a few - and I'll warn you now, I am an OPEN BOOK. If you don't want to know the details of how we came to this decision to adopt, stop reading now!):
- 2003
- Married
- Had a discussion early in our relationship about adoption. Since I had a history of fibroid tumors which required numerous surgeries, we knew conceiving would be a challenge for us.
- 2004
- Another surgery - we were told our best chances at conceiving would be immediately following the surgery, which happened to coincide with:
- Building our new home. This was enough to focus on, without TRYING to have children at the right time, under the right circumstances, blah blah blah, so we decided to:
- Stop trying NOT to have children (yes, that's what I meant - we stopped trying NOT to have children)
- 2005
- Moved into our new house
- Started TRYING to conceive - no luck
- 2006
- More of the same
- 2007
- Went through approximately 6 months of fertility treatments, but ultimately decided it was not worth the stress and heartache. We found it worse than trying on our own and not succeeding. Neither one of us felt a strong need to have a child with a biological connection to us, we just wanted a family.
- 2008
- Decided to let nature take its course for a bit longer
- Began seriously looking into adoption
- 2009
- Life-altering illness strikes Mike
- All talk of adoption put on hold
- 2010
- Blessed with health, more happiness than ever, and a renewed desire to start a family
- October 2010
- Began application / homestudy process
- Present Day
- Sharing this exciting news in our first of many blog posts!
- Will come up with something a little more introspective for our next post...
